Ecolodge Bukit Lawang - Bukit Lawang is a peaceful village in the province of North Sumatra. The location is a main access point into the green heart of Sumatra: the Leuser Ecosystem. You will have the unique chance to view wild orangutans in a guided tour through the lush forests of the region.

The facility provides an unprecedented opportunity to be immersed in North Sumatra’s unique rainforest environment while directly contributing to the conservation of the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan – with proceeds donated to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme.
The Ecolodge Bukit Lawang was established to complement and serve as an outlet for the activities of the Bohorok Environmental Education Centre. Herein we aim to increase awareness towards biodiversity conservation and the implementation and management of proper ecotourism.
Ecolodge Bukit Lawang
The Ecolodge Bukit Lawang was established initially to support the activities of the Bohorok Environmental Education Centre (PPLH Bohorok) managed by YEL, the Sustainable Ecosystems Foundation (Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari).
The main objective of Ecolodge Bukit Lawang is to promote eco-tourism in the region.
We achieve this by disseminating information about environmental conservation and through ecological-friendly management. Sustainable activities and practices are promoted both to visitors and staying guests, with at the heart of our work on deep-seated concern for the protection and continued conservation of the Leuser Ecosystem – the last stronghold of the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan.

All profits generated by the Ecolodge Bukit Lawang are re-invested into the conservation of the Sumatran orangutan and its rainforest habitat, environmental education and community development programmes, under the management of YEL.

Siamang Lodge
Tucked away in the heart of Ecolodge’s garden, our Siamang bungalows are lovingly furnished, in charming setting offering you a comfortable and peaceful ambience, which makes you forget all troubles.

Hornbil Lodge
The Hornbill Lodge is built as a complex consisting of 12 bungalows with great rural charm. Due to its secluded location at the back corner of the garden and its design of the 8 bungalows, clustering around a central garden, Hornbill Lodge is ideal for and in fact also highly favoured by group travellers. The functional furnishing of the Lodge provides a comfortable and pleasant stay, which will be sweet to remember.

Orangutan Lodge

Thomas Leaf Monkey Lodge
The hand-crafted bamboo furniture of the Thomas’ Leaf Monkey rooms match with the curtains and naturally pigmented colouring of the floors – individually designed for every room. The «mandi» (traditional Indonesian shower) in the open-air bathroom offers an unforgettable experience of its own.

The 2.6 million hectare Leuser Ecosystem completely contains within it the Gunung Leuser National Park, which itself helps comprise the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Enjoy the unique event of observing Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutans in their natural habitat, with unique flora and fauna abound. Discover exotic flowers, among them wild orchids and the giant Rafflesia, some of which you may have only known until now from your local florist, and others perhaps not.
Discover an astonishing variety of insects, many of which have developed incredible abilities to blend in with the environment or in mimicking poisonous relatives, in order to protect themselves from predators. In view of such natural delight, one can expect nothing less than to be amazed at the natural wonders offered on a daily basis in the Leuser forests.
Ecolodge Bukit Lawang
Dive into the Gunung Leuser National Park and encounter semi-wild orangutans, who were reintroduced through the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP). Furthermore you have the chance to see a great variety of the flora and fauna of the Sumatran rainforest.
Learn about local fruits, vegetables and organic farming practices. Our farmer Anto is motivated to respond to your individual wishes, to share his experience and to have an interchange of knowledge.
Experience the local communities, their culture, livelihood and traditions, through a variety of opportunities from local entrepreneurs, artists and farmers. Enjoy a village tour and learn to cook a real «nasi goreng» (fried rice) dish, collect your own vegetables from the local gardens and prepare it the traditional Bukit Lawang way.
Learn from the people how rice is grown, how rubber is tapped, where chocolate originates from, weave your own mat from pandanus leaves, learn about natural roof thatching (atap) and weaving walls (tepas) with bamboo, carve your own coconut pendant or create a sculpture from driftwood with local artists – or a multitude of other ‘country wisdom’ gems that may have otherwise been considered lost to the ages.
Things To Do In Bukit Lawang
Walking along the Landak River
One such example is a trip to the nearby pristine Landak river. You can easily explore by yourself. A pleasant walk through local rubber and citrus plantations, will lead you to the banks of the river, where you can reward yourself with a refreshing swim,

Exploring the Bat Cave
Take a stroll through the surrounding rubber plantations and stop at the Bat Cave to have a look at these special creatures. Entrance fee 25.000 Rp / person. Guides are available on the spot.

Whether buying or selling goods or having a chat – on Friday the people of Bukit Lawang meet on the market.
Tangkahan
Make a Daytour and go to Tangkahan, where you can take part in the daily washing of the Elephants.
